The Society for Forensic and Analytical Scientists Nigeria (SFASN) was birthed out of the need to bring together Academics, Students, Industry personnel’s, Military and Para-military officers, actively involved in teaching and/or research using tools of forensic and analytical sciences. SFASN secretariat is domiciled in the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science, University of Lagos. Presently, her members consist of Scientists from the academia and research institutions whose goals align with that of the vision and mission of the Society.
Specifically, the objectives of SFASN are to promote forensic studies and research in Nigeria, foster inter-university and corporate collaboration in forensic research, provide adequate training and workshops that will further strengthen forensic knowledge, and provide solutions that could solve crimes perpetuated in Nigeria and outside the country.
As a prelude to the registration of the society in 2014, the promoters have organized 3 workshops and 1 colloquium that had over 500 participants from different spheres in attendance. Notably, this has helped to train several including but not limited to Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Scientists, and members of the Nigerian Police and Nigerian Army.
Participants received adequate training on various techniques including DNA fingerprinting, DNA profiling, Blood splatter analysis, Crime scene investigation and Analysis. Several participants at those trainings have since then, been applying knowledge of techniques gained in their various fields and research. As a result, SFASN felt it was necessary to organize a forum where novel findings could be presented. Hence, the 1st SFASN conference coming up in November 2019.
To further deepen scientific knowledge, the Society shall be organizing Conferences annually for members and non-members to discuss recent developments in various fields and sub-fields of Forensics. Ultimately, SFASN hopes to host a journal (Forensic Analytica) where peer-reviewed articles and materials that promote the aim and objectives of the Society could be published.
